Awash Sebat, April 23, 2026 — The Awash Sebat Town Water Supply and Sanitation Project has now
been completed and officially opened for public use. The project was carried out by BIGETA Business
PLC under an agreement signed on March 30, 2021. More than 62,000 people will benefit from this
project by gaining access to clean and safe drinking water. The total cost of the project is over 650
million ETB.
This project is an important step in improving water supply in the area. It will provide water for
households and also support the nearby pastoralist community, including water for their livestock.
Project Scope and Technical Highlights
- Civil Works
- Installation of collector and transmission pipelines (HDPE & DCI):
o PN16 OD 160mm – 315mm =16,183.2 m
o DCI DN 300mm PN16 – 192 m
o DCI DN 150mm PN16 – 30 m - Construction works:
o 1000 m³ reinforced concrete ground reservoir & 24 m high, 250 m³ elevated reservoir
o 500 m³ ground reservoir at Booster Station (BPS-01) - Auxiliary facilities:
o Four generator houses
o Two booster station pump houses
o Six guard houses
o One chlorination building
o Sanitary facilities, fencing, and electrical installations
- Supply of Pipes and Fittings
- HDPE pipelines:
o OD 160mm PN16 – 2,485 m
o OD 225mm PN16 – 200 m
o OD 280mm PN16 – 4,653 m
o OD 315mm PN16 – 9,154 m - DCI pipelines:
o DN 300mm PN16 – 330 m
o DN 250mm PN16 – 140 m
o DN 150mm PN16 – 30 m
- Electromechanical Works
- Installation of diesel generators:
o Six generator sets (4 × 200 KVA, 1 × 400 KVA, 1 × 150 KVA) - Pumping systems:
o Eight electric-driven horizontal multistage centrifugal pumps
(2 × 25 kW, 2 × 58 kW, 2 × 30 kW, 2 × 35 kW)
o Four submersible borehole pumps
(2 × 45 kW, 1 × 25 kW, 1 × 42 kW)
During the inauguration ceremony, H.E Dr. Eng Habtamu Itefa Ministry of Water and Energy of FRDE
and President of Afar Region Haji Awol Arba highlighted the importance of the project in meeting the
growing water demand in the area. They also appreciated the successful completion of the project and
emphasized the need for proper operation and maintenance to ensure its long-term sustainability.
